If you do a lot of highway driving especially living in L.A. where speeding in city streets are few unless you’re driving wrecklessly the GPS autolearn feature doesn’t do much but get in the way. I turn off the redlight camera alerts since it’s pointless on highways and getting a warning on the 405 about a redlight camera gets annoying after a few times. I’m still not too sure about it’s effective range yet but I do get warned about Ka bands which are 100% police. Unless you’re doing 150 this will definitely do the job. The autolearn w/ gps is definitely a plus when you get off the freeway on your daily commutes, but it does have auto-mute feature on both 9500ix and Redline and unless you plan on sitting at that spot with your detector on for a long time having a better range would be more beneficial.

The only other benefit other than the autolearn feature would be the GPS for speedcams on the highway or something, but you don’t have that problem in L.A. so kinda useless for me. Also the autolearn is mostly good for blocking annoying X band and some K bands from automatic doors and such. You can mark speed traps but that gets annoying too, might as well be getting false alert set by you 95% of the time. Unless you were planning on running a lot of redlights for some reason and just not the ones with a redlight camera no need for the redlight gps. My detector rarely goes off with the current settings so when it does I brake, but sometimes you wonder if it’s even working -.- (it is though).

So all in all if I had to choose between the 2 for the price I would get the Redline, but the 9500ix is still quite good. You can always invest in just the GPS standalone component and add it to your Redline down the road. If you live in other states the speedcam feature may be quite useful, also if you plan on a long road trip.

TomTom XXL 540M 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Really great overall. Only a few things keep me from suggesting 5-star. I find the screen is a nice large size and easy to read. Data input is easy, doesn’t make you type the beyond enough letters to pick from a scroll list, and there are 4 keyboard choices with large keys for my thumbs to work without a problem. I really like the life-time maps concept for current maps (compares to phone navigation that usually is always latest maps). Map updates are expensive otherwise. Routes seem correct and smart. Built in traffic would be nicer (as with the “MT” model), but that is what the optional assessory is for this model. However, I haven’t bought or used the traffic assessory that is RDMS (radio-based), which looks expensive, and supposedly limited to major roadways compared to internet-based traffic updates of phones and other systems. The verbal driections are effective and well worth it. Overall, I really like it. It is a nice device if you want a one-time purchase, a dedicated device, and a large display. All things considered, it really only falls short on no configurable street name speach speed for enunciation and screen touchy so that I keep setting my volume to 0 when I want it to repeat the last direction, which keeps me from saying 5 star. So my rating is I really like it.

A dedicated GPS device will tend to have a much better GPS receiver than phones and I haven’t had a problem at all with GPS signal so far. It can show you active GPS data signal from all sources. Location tracking seems very fast, current, & reliable. It seems to take 30 seconds to 2 mintutes to get a GPS signal when I first turn it on. It seems to remember where I last was and assumes you are still there, and you can plan a new route from there and start. By the time I get to my first turn it seems to be already up and tracking me. If you connect it to a PC by USB to update, it supposedly can update GPS satellite locations for the next 7 days at a time to get the signal even faster.

The spoken turn-by-turn with street names is a must for me so I know which street to turn on when there are several. This is especially useful if there are GPS signal problems which I have had on *other* devices so I can watch for the street if it is lagging my location a little bit. The volume & speaker quality seem great, better than phones, and can automatically adjust based on your speed to account for road noise. However spoken street names really only works with the computer voice. The device comes with 4 English human voices (3 female, 1 male) and one computer voice (female), and you can download a different male computer voice, Simon (UK) for free. The human voices are a bit clearer, but no street names from what I can tell. Some devices like some phone navigation offers many human street names and if none available automatically mixes in a computer spoken street name. I wish I could have this mix a human voice when available and fill in with computer spoken streen names & messages. It is only one or the other, so I just leave the computer voice on. The default computer voice is decent for main directions & numbers, but mis-pronounces a bit. For example, the 10th largest US City, San Jose, is spoken as “San Hua-Se” instead of “San Ho-say”. But realistically that is entirely forgivable and you can navigate by it without error. What is more difficult is the enunciation of street names which are spoken too fast and not enunciated well. I prefer the downloadable Simon (UK) computer voice which seems a bit better. If unfamiliar with the streets, which is the main case for me to use a navigation device, I need to hear the name enunciated well so I can see road signs and understand what the name will look like, and this falls short, but is still workable. If you can look at the screen and just see the name, it solves it, but isn’t always convenient while driving, but a good vent mount like NAVGEAR 14027 Universal GPS Vent Mount really helps. You cannot configure the computer speach to slow down, which would solve it for street names.

The touch screen is a bit too touchy. It actually seemed great out of the box, then after I updated the device the first time which installed an updated version of the software (which added enhancements like 4 keyboard choices), the screen seems to me to be more touchy. This is actually problemmatic and annoying at times. You touch the screen to bring up the menu or select a menu item. But sometimes it registers 2 presses and closes the menu or selects the item that was at the same location without a delay from the first selection. Seems like they could add a delay between registering presses in menus. A bit too often I end up somewhere else from it registring 2 presses. The most problemmatic is pressing the lower-left to have it repeat a direction, which also brings up the volume control starting in the same spot with the 0% at the same location you just pressed. It nearly always ends up immediately changing my volume to 0 when I wanted it to repeat the direction, and now I miss all spoken directions until I can fix it, which is more difficult while driving. Still, if you are just careful, pay attention, or don’t use the screen while driving which you shouldn’t anyway, then should be fine. I am still very happy with it despite a bit of a touchy screen. Makes data entry nice & fast, which is probably why it is turned up.

Updating the device is simple enough and the software seems nice. Enabling the lifetime map service kept failing without a clear error. It turns out you need to run the update first to fully update the device the first time, then it would let me enter the lifetime maps activation code. Restarting the application was the only clue and told me to update. Once activated, it doesn’t make it clear elsewhere in the app that it understands it is updated and goes back to failing. When I first activated, it listed a new map to download, but I just updated the device, so it should have had the latest and I didn’t have the time, so when I went back later the code wouldn’t come up again to list the same map update it did last time. Updating the device the first time took several hours over my DSL to get the 1.6 GB map update and transfer to the device.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

This is my second Magellan GPS. The map is very readable in all lighting conditions and the destination is easy to enter. The sound is not as good as the older unit I purchased three years ago, There is a “fuzzy” quality that I find somewhat anoying, and there is a volume inconsistancy in that the direction instruction is louder than the street name confirmation that follows each instruction. I have tryed to adjust the volume but louder or softer the descrepency remains.

Garmin nüvi 295W 3.5-Inch Widescreen Wi-Fi Portable GPS Navigator Review

I got this because I had a lots of interest in the features and product. Mainly, I was looking for a GPS replacement since; I was giving away my older Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3 to my parents. This is Amazon’s special deal of the day impulse buy. This is basically the same feature as the T-Mobile Garminfone Android without the cellphone. As a multi feature gps on the go that has wifi for email and web surfing, mp3 player, camera with Geo-tagging it is fun to use. As expected from a device that is a jack of all trades, master of none, this is what you get. Most of the reviews I read when I purchased this were from Vine members.

Design:
Well it is the size of most 3.5″ cellphone with average depth. The bottom and top are rubber surrounded by a metal rim. I had no issues with the buttons layout. Camera button is correct on the upper right, volume on the upper left in landscape mode. Cold boot is actually very slow 1-2 minutes, but most of the time it is on standby which is instant and is just one click verse the hold click. This device does get warm when I played with it in my hand via mp3, wi-fi etc. similar to a cellphone when you been calling for awhile. I cannot read word document nor excel file as it stated. I even sent it through my email and it doesn’t open the attachment. Internal HD is 3gb with about 1.5gb is free. Touch screen is as sensitive as my sister Garmin nüvi 1300 4.3 and a lot better than 255w. The screen is as bright as any Garmin except the newer Garmin nüvi 3750

GPS – 4 out of 5
This GPS interface is almost everything like most Garmin, which easy to use like the 2008 255w and 2009 1300. The Favorite, home, recent folder, speedometer, is all the same. I didn’t really see any new feature, I didn’t have before. My biggest question was how would the 3.5″ screen do, compare to the typical 4.3″ screen? From my experience with this, it works fine. I drove with both 295 and 255 gps on. The map screens were exactly the same, except the scale, some speed number maybe moved a little, but nothing much different. So a smaller screen is less of a luxury then the 4.3 but it will work. (See my pic of the screens size difference in the user images) Two major bugs I have was the small voice/ speaker, is very weak. When you max the volume and do sound boost the voice crack a little and is hard to hear compared to the bigger 255w. Put on the British’s accent and you won’t be able to understand anything. FM traffic is the other bug, it is not compatible on this device. For an average to big city with traffic issues, I would prefer to have this feature and sadly there isn’t any. A minor thing is there is no lane assist for some people with higher end Garmin. I haven’t gotten the city Navigator and if I do I will update that. GPS search is as fast as my 255, but seem a tad slower than the 1300.

Wi-Fi for email and web: 3/5
Yeah 3.5″ is just way too small, zooming and scrolling is a painful experience. At least it is a full feature browser, but without flash support. Big site like ESPN takes like 1.5-2 minutes to load. Amazon takes like 40sec and so do CNet. MSN is reasonable. Facebook is instant with it mobile page version. I found my finger hitting the wrong icon all the time here, to add to that layer of frustration. It can saved your cookies for the site you login to and you can change your homepage and delete cookie, in the setting area.
Email is actually good, I have two accounts on it via hotmail and Gmail. They put all emails together in the inbox. It is default to text, but you can upgrade it to web browser view. I connected to my home network fine as so I did at public wifi, no issues there.

Camera. 3.5 out of 5
Well it takes 3.0 megapixel pictures as is. For indoor and no light it is terrible, lack of flash. Outdoor it looks fine. I compared it to my old Canon Powershot SD400 5MP (see user pic also)and it looked a little sharper, but the color range was off with a bluish tint, and two much contrast between light and dark area. Geo-tagging is the great feature. Turn on GPS when you take picture, it will save the coordinates. This is a luxury feature that I most have on my next DSLR aka Nikon D90.

MP3 4.5/5
It works like my last ipod. Only issues is I had to get a 2,5-3.5 headphone converter. Sound good, not anything like your PC can do. Artist, Album, playlist, etc. are all here. You can dump the music onto the spare internal 1.5gb document folder of the Garmin or add a 8gb micro SD card which I did. I threw mp3 under a few folders and it found it all. What it didn’t find or can’t play are movies files: mp4, flv. The Micro SD transfer rate (via usb cable) is 1.-1.5mbps which is slower than typical SD cards.

This device to me is a toy that I can’t do anything very well with, except the GPS. I really can’t recommend it unless you need a GPS and don’t have a data plan smartphone in one. For me, I will use it mainly as a gps unit and feel good that I have a portable email/web browser if I need it. Most public area like malls, restaurants, coffee shops offer free wifi. I think the screen is tad small and would hold out on a 4-4.3″ screen or just get a media player like an Archos 5 32 GB Internet Tablet with Android. This is my first gps unit that came with an usb cord so that is nice.

TomTom XXL 540TM (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

I am a long time user of Garmin GPs systems. I had a Street Pilot C330 for several years and also have a nuvi 765T, so I will draw some comparisons between the TomTom and the Garmin below.

Setup of this device is pretty simple. The instruction guide walks you through connecting it to a PC, downloading updates, etc.

On a high level, the TomTom gets me where I want to go and both visual and audio instructions were clear and timely. The “lane guidance” system , which points out which lane you should be in on multi-lane highways, works very well, It can automatically switch the display to a “blacktop” view, showing the lanes, dividing islands, and highway signs so that the display looks similar to what you are seeing on the road. If you have an older GPS, the lane guidance features alone should be enough reason to upgrade. My Garmin 765 has this same feature and it is similar on both products.

The TomTom controls are simple and intuitive. The TomTom does not seem to provide as much Points Of Interest information as I have become accustomed to with Garmin. The Garmin tell you the POI’s address, city, etc. of each point (store, etc.) rather than just the distance and direction provided by the TomTom. Signal strength seems about the same on my TomTom 540TM and the Garmin 765.

The maps on the TomTom seem current/accurate. The big difference compared to the Garmin is that TomTom includes FREE map updates four times annually for the useable life of the device. Some critics have observed that only TomTom knows what they consider “usable life.” However, I can tell you that Garmin makes you buy most map updates, “usable life” or not. It seems silly to pay for a one time map update on a 0 GPS. To buy the same 4 updates per year that TomTom offers for free costs 9.99 at Garmin.

At 5″ diagonally, the TomTom has a larger display than the Garmin. While certainly very portable, the TomTom does not have much “pocketability”, outside of maybe a large pocket in cargo shorts, etc. I prefer the TomTom’s larger screen, and at 4.3″ the Garmin won’t fit in many pockets either. Most of the GPS products in this size class will fit in a small carrying case, pocketbook, under your car seat, or in your glovebox.

Sound quality: Hearing directions is key when diving with a GPS. The TomTom pronounces words clearly enough to be understood, yet I would say pronunciation is slightly better on my Garmin. However, and it’s a big however, the TomTom has far better volume. With the Garmin 765, if you are on battery power, the maximum volume is fairly low, especially when there is conversation in the car, radio, or road noises. The Garmin volume becomes decent only when you plug in the power adaptor. The TomTom’s volume is fine, regardless of the power source.

Traffic updates on the TomTom come via RDS updates, so you have to connect the device to an FM radio system to receive the RDS data. This means unless you plug in the car power adaptor, the GPS will not get the signal through your car radio, and you won’t get the traffic updates. This is true of the Garmin 765 I own as well.

TomTom also includes their IQ Routes feature, which makes use of historical traffic volume based on the time of day of your trip. Route selections are made with this data factored in, which is a pretty nice feature.

When it comes to mounting the device on the windshield itself, the suction feature on the TomTom is better than the Garmin. The TomTom has a knob integrated with the suction cup so you apply the mount and turn the knob to create a firm adhesion to the windshield. With the Garmin you just push the suction cup on in a standard manner. The Garmin is a little more prone to fall off than the TomTom.

The TomTom uses a very small stand, which is very portable, and much less bulky than on the Garmin products. It does tend to limit you to mounting on the windshield, unless you prefer to use the mounting disk, which to me is a general no-no, putting an adhesive disk on your auto interior. That is a personal choice though, and obviously many people will be fine using the disk. The larger stand on a Garmin allows you to place the device in a cup holder or other front console/dash compartment. Personally, I find the bean bag type accessories an excellent alternative. I would recommend one from Garmin or TomTom, depending of course on which product you own.

I found the mount itself on the TomTom to be very annoying, coming off more than half the time when I adjust it or remove the device from the windshield. The mount reattaches easily to the back of the GPS though.

When it comes to overall features, the Garmin is more loaded at a price of – more – Bluetooth/phone compatibility, redirection of audio through car radio, MP3 capability playable through your car audio system, and photo features. The TomTom sticks more to GPS mainstream, lacking most of these features.

If you want celebrity voices on your GPS, TomTom provides the ability to download these. The Garmin does not. Keep in mind celebrity voices will NOT read you street names, just general instructions.

All in all, I really like the TomTom and in general, would choose this item again over a Garmin. Garmin’s map pricing policy makes me lean toward the tomTom even more.

I tried a pair of these wipers and they clean nicely and are very quiet. The beam design makes a big difference. My car has the small J-hook wiper blade mounting, but the blade did not install with a “click” as per the instructions. I had to use a small flat blade screwdriver to push the plastic mounting piece into the square notch on the wiper arm. Not a big deal, but you have to make sure the blade is seated properly on the wiper arm. Customer service at the 800 phone number was excellent. Have only used in the rain so far and installed about 1 month ago. I plan to buy another pair for my wife’s Forester.

I first purchased the Garmin 1390t from Amazon in early May 2010. Ninety miles into my first trip a week later and the unit froze, like so many other people have reported here. I had to buy a replacement at Best Buy for the remainder of my trip, then return the bad unit to Amazon. Then yesterday, July 7, 2010, I received an e-mail from Garmin about a mandatory software update for the 13xx series as well as the 11xx, 12,, and 14xx series Garmins. Apparently the freezing is a known issue, and this software update prevents the problem. If you don’t apply the update and the unit freezes, there’s nothing you can do. You have to send it to Garmin for repair. Applying the software/firmware update is very, very easy using Garmin’s WebUpdater program, found at Garmin’s website. It’s just disappointing that it took Garmin months to recognize the problem and issue a fix.

Know the Lane Before It’s Too Late
